Our 30-Second Take

Should you subscribe to 1Password?

1Password is the best password manager available — cleanest interface, strongest security architecture, and best family features. At $2.99/month individual or $4.99 family (up to 5 people), it's priced fairly for what you get. After LastPass's 2022 security breach, 1Password has become the default recommendation for anyone who cares about password security. Skip it only if you're all-in on Apple iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager — those are free but significantly less featured.

What 1Password actually is in 2026

1Password is a password manager that stores credentials, credit cards, identity data, secure notes, and documents in an encrypted vault accessible across all devices. Launched in 2006 by AgileBits (now Toronto-based 1Password Inc.), the service has built a reputation for security rigor — quarterly third-party audits, transparent security whitepapers, and a bug bounty program that takes researchers seriously.

What separates 1Password from competitors is its Secret Key architecture: your master password alone can't decrypt your data. The Secret Key (a 128-bit random value generated on your device) combines with your master password to derive the encryption key. If 1Password's servers are breached, attackers get encrypted vaults useless without your Secret Key. This is genuinely different from LastPass's architecture — and why 1Password users weren't affected by the way LastPass's 2022 breach was.

Families at $4.99 for 5 people is genuinely exceptional value. Per-person cost of $1/month for top-tier password security and recovery features beats every competitor including Apple iCloud Keychain (free but no family sharing architecture). The Teams Starter at $19.95/month flat rate for up to 10 users is also unique — most competitors charge per-user from user one, making 1Password substantially cheaper for small businesses under 10 employees. Annual pricing isn't discounted, which is unusual.

What we like
  • Secret Key architecture — even a server breach can't decrypt your data without your device's Secret Key
  • Best UX of any password manager — clean interface, smooth browser extensions, fast autofill
  • Travel Mode — temporarily hides sensitive vaults while crossing borders — genuine privacy feature
  • Watchtower breach monitoring — alerts you to compromised passwords and weak credentials
  • Family plan emergency recovery — family members can help each other recover access if locked out
What to watch for
  • No free tier — unlike Bitwarden (free) and browser password managers (free)
  • Annual not discounted — most subscriptions give annual discounts; 1Password's pricing is identical
  • Steep learning curve for advanced features — shared vaults, permission management take time to master
  • Requires account creation — unlike KeePass which stores everything locally
  • Windows app feels less polished — Mac and mobile are best; Windows client trails

Our Verdict
Best password manager available. Families plan is exceptional value.

1Password is the default recommendation for anyone serious about password security. The Secret Key architecture genuinely differentiates from competitors, the user experience is cleaner than alternatives, and the Families plan at $4.99 for 5 users is remarkably well-priced. Skip it only if you're all-in on Apple's free iCloud Keychain or willing to use Bitwarden Free for basic needs. For anyone else — especially families and small businesses — 1Password is worth the subscription.

1Password: Frequently Asked Questions

Is 1Password worth it in 2026?
Yes for most users who care about security. 1Password's Secret Key architecture is genuinely more secure than LastPass or browser-based managers — even a server breach leaves your data encrypted. The family plan at $4.99 for 5 users is particularly strong. Free alternatives (Bitwarden, iCloud Keychain) work for basic needs but lack 1Password's polish, recovery features, and emergency access capabilities.
What's the cheapest way to get 1Password?
Architecturally, yes. 1Password requires BOTH your master password AND a device-specific Secret Key to decrypt your data. LastPass's system relies primarily on your master password. When LastPass suffered its 2022 breach, attackers obtained encrypted vaults that could be brute-forced with enough computing power. 1Password's Secret Key system means even a full server compromise leaves vaults effectively undecryptable.
What is 1Password Travel Mode?
Travel Mode temporarily hides designated vaults from your devices when enabled. If border agents or thieves access your device, the hidden vaults appear to not exist — no indication they're merely hidden. You re-enable Travel Mode after the trip to restore access. It's a genuine security feature for journalists, activists, and business travelers crossing sensitive borders.
How do I cancel 1Password?
Log in at 1password.com, click your profile → Billing → Cancel Subscription. You retain access until the end of your billing period, then your vault becomes read-only. You can still access existing passwords but can't save new ones or use premium features. Export your data before canceling if you plan to switch services. See our complete 1Password cancellation guide.
What's the best 1Password alternative?
For free: Bitwarden (open-source, legitimately free tier). For Apple-only: iCloud Keychain (free, ecosystem-locked). For password manager + VPN bundle: Dashlane (includes VPN in premium). For enterprise: Keeper or LastPass Business. Honest answer: 1Password is the best overall; alternatives win on specific dimensions (free, Apple integration, bundled features).
