Our 30-Second Take

Should you subscribe to LastPass?

LastPass is hard to recommend in 2026. The 2022 security breach (where attackers obtained encrypted password vaults and backup data) permanently damaged user trust, and parent company GoTo's handling of disclosure was widely criticized. At $3/month for Premium, LastPass is comparable to 1Password in pricing but architecturally weaker in security. If you're currently on LastPass, migrate to 1Password or Bitwarden — the breach consequences are ongoing.

What LastPass actually is in 2026

LastPass is a password manager owned by GoTo (formerly LogMeIn), storing credentials, secure notes, and other sensitive data in encrypted vaults accessible via browser extensions and mobile apps. Launched in 2008, LastPass was the market leader in consumer password management for much of the 2010s before security incidents eroded user trust.

In August 2022, LastPass disclosed a security breach in which attackers gained access to source code and customer data. A subsequent December 2022 disclosure revealed the attackers had also obtained encrypted customer vaults — including website URLs, usernames, passwords, and sensitive notes. The encrypted vaults are subject to brute-force attacks dependent on master password strength. Users with weak master passwords likely had their credentials compromised; even users with strong passwords faced years of uncertainty. LastPass's handling of the disclosure timeline, initial downplaying of the severity, and poor communication led to widespread user migration to alternatives like 1Password and Bitwarden.

LastPass pricing looks competitive but the breach changes the calculation. At $3/month Premium, LastPass is actually slightly cheaper than 1Password ($2.99 but similar) and significantly more expensive than Bitwarden Premium ($10/year = $0.83/month). Given the 2022 breach history and the weaker architectural approach to security, the pricing doesn't justify the risk. For genuinely free password management, Bitwarden Free covers most personal needs without requiring paid upgrade.

What we like
  • Polished user interface — browser extensions and apps are among the most mature in password management
  • Autofill reliability — autofill works across sites better than most competitors
  • Feature breadth — password generator, form filler, secure notes, sharing all well-implemented
  • Still widely supported — almost every service integration supports LastPass
  • Family plan good value — $4/month for 6 users is competitive pricing
What to watch for
  • 2022 breach damage — attackers obtained encrypted vaults; users with weak master passwords remain at risk
  • Trust damage permanent — security community has largely lost confidence in LastPass's handling
  • Weaker architecture than 1Password — single-factor master password vs 1Password's Secret Key design
  • GoTo ownership concerns — parent company has multiple security incidents across products
  • Free tier degraded — free users restricted to single device type (mobile OR desktop, not both)

Our Verdict
Migrate if you haven't already. No reason to start with LastPass in 2026.

LastPass is the cautionary tale of the password management industry. The 2022 breach, combined with poor disclosure handling, has permanently damaged trust. Architecturally, LastPass relies on master-password-only decryption — weaker than 1Password's Secret Key design. If you're a current LastPass user who hasn't migrated, export your vault, change every password stored there, and switch to 1Password or Bitwarden. There is no case for choosing LastPass for new users in 2026.

LastPass: Frequently Asked Questions

Is LastPass worth it in 2026?
Risky. Attackers obtained encrypted customer vaults including URLs, usernames, passwords, and notes. Users with strong master passwords (20+ random characters) are likely safe; users with weaker master passwords may have had their credentials brute-forced by now. If you've used LastPass and haven't rotated all your stored passwords since December 2022, you should assume some may be compromised.
What's the cheapest way to get LastPass?
Yes, most security experts recommend migrating away from LastPass. 1Password's Secret Key architecture provides protection that LastPass's architecture fundamentally can't match — even a full server breach leaves 1Password vaults effectively undecryptable. Migration takes an hour but provides meaningfully better security going forward.
How do I export my LastPass data?
In LastPass web vault, click Advanced Options → Export → LastPass CSV File. Save the file and immediately import into your new password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane all support LastPass imports). Delete the CSV file after import — it's plaintext and dangerous to leave around.
How do I cancel LastPass?
Log in at lastpass.com, go to Account Settings → Subscription → Cancel. You retain paid features until the end of the billing period. Free LastPass still works after cancellation (with single-device-type restriction). Export your vault BEFORE canceling if you plan to migrate. See our complete LastPass cancellation guide including migration strategies.
What's the best LastPass alternative?
1Password ($2.99, superior architecture), Bitwarden (free tier plus $10/year Premium), or Dashlane (includes VPN). Honest answer: all three are clearly better choices than LastPass in 2026 due to architectural security advantages, better recent security track records, and comparable or better pricing.
